COME-In began in 2020 in partnership with TPSE-Math (Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics). A working group of 16 mathematicians and statisticians adapted elements of the SEA Change initiative from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to the unique context and needs of the mathematical and statistical sciences.
This working group was carefully convened to represent the broad landscape of the mathematical sciences, included theoretical and applied mathematicians, statisticians, and mathematics educators, as well as individuals with a broad range of gender, racial, and ethnic identities. They came from community colleges, liberal arts colleges, minority-serving institutions, and R1 and R2 institutions, at career stages ranging from graduate students to senior faculty and those in leadership and administrative roles. Collectively they were active members and leaders in the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the American Statistical Association (ASA), the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), IndigenousMathematicians, Lathisms, the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the National Association of Mathematicians (NAM), the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), and Spectra.
The COME-IN leadership team built on the work of this group to create the full COME-IN program.
With support from the NSF from January 2024 through April 2025, COME-IN launched the first cohort of six department teams. These included mathematics and statistics departments from R1 and R2 institutions and liberal arts and community colleges. Each department was paired with a trained external consultant to collaborate with them throughout their transformation.
